BMW unveils two new i-branded electric vehicle concepts that reflect the company's vision for the future of the automotive industry. They were shown to the public in Germany. The city car BMW i3, as well as the sports car BMW i8, will be the first cars of the company created from scratch as an electric vehicle or hybrid car. Previously, the company took existing models and reworked them, replacing the combustion engine with an electric motor.

BMW i3 is an electric vehicle built for the urban environment. The car, which used to bear the name MegaCity Vehicle, is equipped with a 125 kW electric motor, which allows it to travel up to 150 km from a single battery charge. Auto accelerates from 0 to 60 km / h in 3.9 seconds, from 0 to 100 km / h in 7.9 seconds, and high-speed charging allows you to bring the charge level to 80% in just an hour. In standard mode, a complete cycle takes 6 hours.

In order to achieve high efficiency, the i3 uses the BMW LifeDrive architecture, which implies a body made mainly of carbon plastic, so that the weight of the car is only 1250 kg. Side doors are carriage-style to provide access to the rear seats. Although the BMW i3 was originally created as a pure electric vehicle, it will also be available with an optional small Rex motor, the main purpose of which is to charge the electric motor to increase the driving range. This decision was the result of the BMW Mini E pilot program, whose drivers most wanted an extended range of electric vehicles.

BMW also showed the i8 concept. This 1,480 kg hybrid sports car is based on the Vision EfficientDynamics concept unveiled at the 2021 Frankfurt Auto Show. Using the energy of only one battery and an electric motor (power - 96 kW), a 4-seater car can drive about 35 km before switching to a 3-cylinder gasoline engine with a capacity of up to 164 kW. Three driving modes are supported: electric motor only, gasoline engine only and combined mode.

BMW i8 can accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in just 4.6 seconds and top speed is limited to 250 km / h. With standard charging, the vehicle battery can be fully recharged in 2 hours. It is also worth noting that the car is able to provide economical driving with a fuel consumption of 2.7 liters per 100 km.

The BMW i3 is slated to hit the market in 2021 and the BMW i8 in 2021. More details about live photos of the concepts can be found on the BimmerPost forum, where you can also separately consider a lot of official concept drawings of the BMW i3 and BMW i8.
